Sizing Scorpion was bought, expensively, with better things in mind that an 80-109 handicap hurdle but the Henry De Bromhead trained Potts Partnership owned gelding did finally get off the mark in that grade at Fairyhouse today, in the Your Clubs Fundraiser At Fairyhouse, Enquire Today Handicap Hurdle.
Rated 89, the Jonathan Burke ridden bottom weight battled well in the closing stages to hold off the challenge of Elusive Ivy by half a length.
The son of Scorpion was bought for E250,00 at the 2012 Derby Sale and was gaining a maiden win after one point-to-point and six previous racecourse starts.
De Bromhead later commented "he was very backward when we first got him, and Alan (Potts, owner) said to leave him off for a year. He's really matured and is a much better horse now. Anything over hurdles is a bonus looking ahead over fences.
"We'll try to find something similar and I'd prefer to get more experience over hurdles and go chasing next year."
