Cannes Do rolled home best to take the Elphin Handicap in Roscommon by half a length.

This was the five-year-old mare's first victory at the 13th time of asking for trainer Philip Byrne.

Chris Hayes got busy inside the final quarter of a mile and his mount began to stay on threateningly racing to the final furlong.

She produced her finish down the outer and grabbed Dark Viper (8/1) in the closing stages. Long-time-leader Sneddy Eddie was another length and three-parts away in third at 8/1.

Byrne said: “We have only two horses for the Flat and both have won now, so we're delighted.

“She's a home-bred - she took a while to get organised last season, but this season she knows her job quite well and she's on the up.

“She might be for sale, if someone is interested. I don't know where we go next with her, but Chris said there are a good few races left in her, so we'll see.

“That was probably a bit tight distance-wise, but she got a good ride. He took his time, he just had to let her get organised halfway up the straight and when she did ,he said she ran on for him.”

The Raceday Stewards interviewed L.F. Roche, rider of fourth-placed Nibras Rainbow concerning his use of the whip in the closing stages of this race. Evidence was heard from the rider concerned who accepted he was in breach of the Whip Regulation and stated his mount lugged right in the straight. Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence the Raceday Stewards were satisfied that L.F. Roche was in breach of R.10.3(g)(frequency) and having considered his clean record in this regard, they suspended him for three racedays.
