The ups and downs of the jumping game were cruelly exemplified in the McCarthy Insurance Group Maiden Hurdle at Cork where Making Shapes took advantage of the final flight fall of B Cosmos
B Cosmos looked set to provide former jockey Andrew McNamara with his first winner since joining the training ranks when holding a slight advantage at the final flight.
However the well-backed evens favourite took a fatal fall (broke shoulder) leaving David Splaine’s mount to come home a wide-margin winner.
The 10/1 chance, trained by Charles Byrnes for Adare native Martin White, finished 20 lengths clear of Ainslie who edged out Jewelled Prince close home for the runner-up spot.
Byrnes said, “He was probably a lucky winner but he kept plugging away. I thought he would run well the last day but he didn’t jump. He enjoyed being up there, and the ground helped today. It is lovely good ground but he wouldn’t want it any quicker.
“It’s great to get the win, and he’ll mix it over the summer on the flat and jumps.”
