Round Tower didn't surprise everyone when winning the concluding Daily Mirror (Pro/Am) Flat Race at Down Royal today at odds of 20/1, scoring on his debut for trainer Karl Thornton and jockey Johnny Barry.

The son of Presenting was all out in the closings stages for a head win over the fast finishing Danielle's Journey and following the win Thornton revealed “he was always going to be a big price coming out of a small yard but we were waiting for a bit of rain and thought a few days ago if the ground was safe, he'd take all the beating.”

“The boys backed him at 40/1 this morning and my brother had a good few quid on him!”

He added “he's a real good horse and we thought we'd make plenty of use of him as he's a tough sort who would be hard to pass.

“He's still a bit immature and will improve for that. He has been working well and will go for a winners' bumper next.”

Winning owner Jim Brennan later indicated the winner is for sale.
