Renneti is certainly not the most consistent horse in training but the enigmatic dual-purpose gelding was on his very best behaviour this afternoon when taking the Keelings Irish Strawberry Hurdle at Fairyhouse.
The quirky eight-year-old jumped to the front four out in this Grade race, and was clearly travelling best early in the straight before drawing clear under Ruby Walsh to score in decisive fashion.
The French-bred, completing a double on the day for Walsh and Willie Mullins after the equally impressive win earlier in the day of Diakali stayed on strongly to beat De Plotting Shed by an easy nine lengths. Tombstone finished another eight and a half lengths away in third.
Mullins said, “He has great ability but doesn’t always give it. The bit of nice ground there and he was in happier form today. We’ll try and find another opportunity for him and he can go back on the flat as well.”
