Declan McDonogh completed a double at odds of a little over 20/1 as Herring Island made all the running to take the NavanRacecourse.ie Maiden.
Successful in the opener on Rhythm Of Zain the 2006 champion jockey set steady enough early fractions aboard the Australia colt who found enough under pressure up the hill to hold Barud by a neck.
The Joseph O’Brien-trained winner had finished third on debut at Naas last month.
“I'm very happy with him," said McDonogh.
“Nobody wanted to go on and he was left in front but he stays well and I was happy to keep pressing on from the three and make it a test.
“He got to the line but he wasn't doing a stroke, he was just waiting on them and he would possibly be better with a lead. It was just the way it fell today.
“He got through the ground well, he's a likeable horse and I'd say there is plenty left in the locker.
“Next year he's going to get a distance, he's a lovely staying type. He showed a good attitude at the finish and he's a nice colt.”
