Connections were thrilled with the performance of 66-1 shot Last Encounter after he chased home Bellshill in Grade One company at Naas.
The progressive son of Beneficial made the running in the Lawlor's Hotel Novice Hurdle before giving way to the odds-on winner approaching the final flight.
Trainer Mags Mullins revealed the six-year-old has earned an entry at the Cheltenham Festival, but he may stay at home, with chasing a long-term aim.
"We were delighted with him and he came out of it well," said Mullins.
"We'll see where we go now. I'm not sure if he's good enough to go to Cheltenham but he deserves an entry, anyway. There is plenty for him at home as well.
"He's a good improving horse. He's versatile ground wise as he didn't mind that the other day and he won his maiden hurdle on better ground.
"He was still a baby then, though, and is a different horse now. He has matured.
"He's a chaser in the making."
