Once the market indicated a fancy for Sea Light which it did from early in the day, he was going to be hard to beat in the BBQ Evening At Clonmel Races Beginners Chase. Charles Byrnes' runner delivered to give Davy Russell his third winner from as many rides at Powerstown Park.
A big threat to Sea Light was eliminated when Fly Rory Fly fell at the second last fence.
Sea Light made an error at the final fence with a circuit to go but when it really mattered he jumped the same obstacle well.
That was a help for the useful hurdler as he held on from the fast finishing Master Appeal by half a length.
Russell's earlier winners were Dawn In The Park for Joseph O'Brien in the 5.15 and on Just Janice for John Kiely in the 6.20.
"The mistake with a circuit to go was really rider error. They were going a good gallop and he needed to jump but there was no need to ask him to go that long," said Russell on the 13/8 victor, reportedly from as big as 5/1 earlier.
"It was lucky it happened at that stage as he had enough time and learned from it."
Owners the Come Home Sober Syndicate are from Newcastle West and they are keen to go to Galway again this year.
