Townend gets McGeeney home
Willie Mullins, who has enjoyed such a terrific record at Punchestown in recent years, got off the mark for the week when Johnny McGeeney landed the '3' Handicap Hurdle.
Paul Townend gave the gelding a confident ride, taking a pull after the second last as he travelled sweetly into contention.
The 10/1 shot kicked on before the final flight but a slightly awkward leap there let 7/2 favourite Nearest The Pin back in with a shout.
Townend, who was moving six clear in the jockeys title race, conjured more from his mount on the run-in to hold that rival at bay by a neck.
"The experience he had jumping all winter stood to him," said Mullins afterwards.
"It's probably the first time he's had the decent ground that he wants.
"We may put him away now for Galway. He's a summer horse and I suppose we'll have a go at the Galway Hurdle. Although today's win probably won't help him handicap wise."
