The Charlie Swan trained Lo Siento (5/2) made up for seven previous defeats when getting off the mark for the first time at Galway today, winning the CCTV Venue Control Maiden Hurdle at Galway today, under dual Champion Jockey Davy Russell.
The son of Oscar had previously finished second, third and fourth in previous maiden hurdle starts and made no mistake today, scoring a comfortable five lengths win over 7/4 favourite Celtic Abbey
Afterwards Swan, himself a former ten times Champion Jockey, stated “I don't know what happened him the last day but today's race wasn't great. I imagine he'll go chasing soon but might have another run over hurdles.
“I'm delighted for Philip (Reynolds, owner) who is a loyal fellow and a good supporter of mine.
“I liked him as a young horse and fancied him to win early in his career but he's a big horse and probably was a bit weak and backwards last year.”
Appropriately give the horse's costly history (started a well backed 7/2 chance on his bumper debut), 'lo siento' is the Spanish for 'I'm sorry'.
The Stewards interviewed P. Carberry, rider of Stilo Blue Native concerning his use of the whip after the final hurdle. Evidence was heard from the rider concerned. Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence the Stewards were satisfied that P. Carberry was in breach of R10(3)(g) by using his whip with his arm above shoulder height and consequently suspended him for one race day having taken his previous record into consideration.
