Sangria today gained compensation following her November disqualification, as the Joseph O'Brien trained filly gained a maiden win in Dundalk's Book Online At DundalkStadium.com Handicap.
The MV Magnier and Paul Shanahan-owned daughter of Gutaifan was the 'weighed-in' winner of a course Nursery on November 3 but shortly afterwards, it was discovered her apprentice jockey Mikey Sheehy had claimed 5lbs instead of 3lbs.
At a subsequent enquiry, Sangria was indeed disqualified and while unsuccessful in four later runs, today came from last-to-first to score by two lengths win from Cousin Shay
It was winning jockey Jake Coen's first winner for trainer O'Brien, whose assistant Brendan Powell later said “she deserved that after having the race taken off her - it was nobody's fault, just one of those things.
“That’s Jake’s first winner for us - he’s still at school but he rides out at the weekends for us.”
He added “that was her first time over a mile and Jake said last time that she would go further.
“She settles well, they went quite hard there and he took his time. She picked up well and he said she galloped right through the line. A mile is going to be her job now.”
