Bergamasco stepped up to a mile for the first time on his handicap debut and came home strongly off a strong pace to land the Bar One Racing ‘Guaranteed Overnight Prices’ Nursery.
The Jack Davison-trained gelding, who showed promise in four maiden starts, had to wait for a gap between horses before quickening up inside the final furlong for James Ryan.
The 7/1 chance kept on well to beat Dream Ticket by a length with Miami Sunshine was a further two and a half lengths back in third.
Davison said, "He has (delivered up in trip), it is actually a very satisfying win because he's a horse that always worked well and he was probably ahead of himself mentally early in the season comparative to his frame, he's a big horse.
"He knew his job too well early and then he was overracing in the early part of his race, when really he is probably a miler behind it all.
"We changed tactics today - we just said to James to jump and do everything he could to ride him cold and get him to settle.
"Thankfully, they went a nice gallop. It was a super ride from James, though. He is a 5lb claimer, but if Colin (Keane) rode that horse you would say it was a super ride. He is very talented. Full credit to him and the horse.
"He's a big horse and I'd say he is on the improve. Hopefully, he will go on from this."
