The 12yo Prosperity Square continued to belie his years, as he recorded his sixth career success in the Opel 172 Handicap Chase.
The son of Anshan has been a great servant to trainer Conor O'Dwyer, and he was recording his third win at Wexford this evening.
A disappointing thirteen at Limerick on Saturday, he was sent off an 8/1 chance this evening from an opening show of 10s.
Settled in mid-division by Rachael Blackmore, he took closer order before four out and was pushed along in a share of the lead as they approached the straight.
He was ridden in to a narrow lead before the last, and kept on best on the run-in, going on to score by two and a quarter lengths in the colours of owner Owen Curtin. Presenting Mahler (12/1) kept on well to take second under Danny Mullins for John Ryan, while Urtheoneiwant (7/1) was a neck away in third for Davy Russell and Gordon Elliott. A Sizing Network was sent off the 5/2 favourite and he finished fourth under Donal McInerney for Jessica Harrington.
O'Dwyer said afterwards: "That was super. He is some horse.
"That's twice now that I've been wrong with the ground. The ground had dried again on his last two runs, and when things are happening too quick for him he is too old to keep going. But when it's that bit softer, things are slowed down, he loves it and is able to operate better in it.
"Obviously he loves here as well, he is after winning three here, left-handed and right-handed!
"We had thoughts of retiring him but they will be put on hold now. He won't go on winter ground, but there is still plenty of races for him. I think there is a 0-102 back here in the coming months.
"He is after winning six races and he is a fabulous horse to have. There is nothing for him at Galway. I took a chance with him today because there was a small entry.
"Rachael gave him a fantastic ride, she did exactly what I told her to do."
STEWARDS REPORT
The Stewards requested a report from Conor O'Dwyer, trainer as to the apparent improvement in form of Prosperity Square, placed first, as compared with its recent form. The trainer reported that his charge disappointed on his last two starts when unable to go the pace on good ground. Returning to a softer surface, his charge travelled better and was able to stay in contention. Having considered the evidence the Stewards noted the explanation offered.
