Aidan O'Brien's Sir Erec stayed on powerfully from fifth approaching the final furlong to win the Listed Martin Molony Stakes in Limerick by a comfortable four lengths.
The 9/2 shot was switched out from behind horses by Michael Hussey and found an extra gear at the furlong pole.
It was here that The King had gone for home but he was swamped by Sir Erec coming to the final 100 yards and the latter strode right away to win well.
The King, the 6/4 favourite, had to settle for second under Colm O'Donoghue.
Michael Hussey said: "He is a nice horse. He was in a bit of a pocket but got me out of it and quickened up well and loved the ground.
"He is a nice big horse and uses himself well. He does everything well and didn't mind the ground. There is a big improvement to come from him."
Sir Erec gave O'Brien an across-the-card double as Norway took the opening Listed race at Newmarket today.
