Dual-purpose trainer Denis Hogan continues in good form, and the Cloughjordan handler was again on the mark as Make A Challenge made all under teenage apprentice Joey Sheridan in the seven-furlong Fairyhouse Handicap.
Sheridan (17), who joined Hogan this year after gaining experience both on the pony racing circuit and at Ballydoyle, was doubling his career tally having rode his first winner on Eastern Racer for Hogan at Dundalk last month.
The well-backed 11/4 favourite (from 9/2) stayed on strongly from over a furlong out to score by two lengths, while Above Us Only Sky edged out Angels for the runner-up spot.
Hogan said, “Joey said there might not be much pace so I told him not to be afraid to go on if they are only hacking and he did. He’s well able to ride, and if he can keep his feet on the ground and stays working away hard we’ll make a job of him.
“He’s signed on to me and he’s a good worker. If he keeps the head down he has a right good chance as he’s light and rides well.
“The yard is rocking and it’s good that they are still in good form as we are heading to Epsom on Saturday. I’m looking forward to it.
“Hathiq is in super nick. He went off at mid-day today. He got 11lb but just has a 4lb penalty on Saturday and has a brilliant draw on the stands’ side in 18.
“I know it’s a massive step up but he deserves to take his chance at the weights. He’s bounced out of the Curragh but he’ll have to change gear again at the weekend.”
