After winning on Ice Cold In Alex earlier, Jamie Powell completed a 29/1 double when guiding San Aer to victory in the Bord Na Mona Recycling Apprentice Handicap.
It was a second Curragh double of the season for the talented 7lb claimer with the Rockingham Handicap being part of his first one on Irish Derby weekend.
He bided his time in mid-division on San Aer who came through a gap over a furlong out and soon went out after Cnodian The Vocalised gelding wore down that rival close home to score by half a length. Super Cub and Ducky Mallon filled the frame.
Winning trainer Tom Mullins said: Tom Mullins, “He’s settling better with the hood.
“I thought he was a little unlucky at Galway as he got to the front too soon.
“Jamie gave him a lovely ride. He said he got him in tight with the second horse in the last half-furlong and he was game so you would like that.
“He didn’t win since Killarney in soft ground last year so you would like to think there is more improvement in him when the heavy ground comes.”
