Those who steamed into David Wachman’s Pearl Earing in the seven furlong auction race for two-year-olds at Sligo must have enjoyed watching the race unfold as she proved different class to her four rivals.
This filly had been runner-up in a Limerick auction maiden in June and then was pitched into a Curragh Group 3 at the end of that month. She came home sixth to Bye Bye Birdie in that hot company. Today’s task was much easier for the daughter of Excellent Art.
Wayne Lordan quickly moved her out into the lead and she dictated the fractions round Sligo’s bends. On the homeward turn her rivals were toiling and she quickened away in the final furlong for a facile six and a half lengths success.
She had been 6/4 this morning, but was well punted down to an SP of 4/5 favourite. Victory Rich won the race for second at 12/1.
“It was straightforward. She travelled and when you travel round here it’s a big plus,” Wayne Lordan said.
“She quickened up well and was entitled to win like that. We’ll look for a bit of black-type for her now.”
This was a rare excursion to Sligo for a David Wachman-trained horse. Prior to this winner he only had seven runners on the flat at the Western venue since 2009 and none of them won.
