Osirixamix gains deserved win
Osirixamix claimed some compensation for a cruel Hilly Way fall when cruising to success in the two-mile handicap hurdle at Fairyhouse today.
Tony Martin's charge was set to defeat Golden Silver in the Grade 2 event last month before crashing out at the final fence.
There were no scares back over hurdles today as Paul Carberry cut out the running on the Desert Prince gelding.
He had his field struggling turning for home and a shake of the reins after the second last settled matters.
Carberry sat motionless from the final hurdle as the 4/1 shot cantered home by two-and-three-quarter lengths from 4/5 favourite Lastoftheleaders
"He was unlucky in Cork and is a fair horse on his day when things go right for him," said Martin.
Owner Timothy Fitzgerald is an "inner city farmer" from St Margarets in Dublin and he was in top form afterwards.
"I'm the last of a dying breed! That's a great double - the Dubs winning the All-Ireland and Osirixamix winning here. The trainer and jockey are both Meath men which is great as well."
The winner is also part owned by Garrettstown publican Niall Gormley and the celebrations for today's victory are being planned for his pub.
It was a double on the card for Paul Carberry following the first race victory of Dont Back Down
The New Year's Day meeting at Fairyhouse attracted 400 more than last year with 3,513 in through the gates today.
