Newellen came with a well-timed surge to claim the Tipperary Perpetual Cup at Clonmel this evening. Waydownsouth got a lovely run up the rail to lead entering the straight in the two-mile contest but couldn't hold the charge of the John Oxx-trained winner.

Niall McCullagh came wide turning for home and gave his mount a strong drive to get on top inside the final furong and record a length victory.

The Montjeu filly was making her second start in handicap company having been fourth at Tipperary last month. She was stepping up to two miles for the first time.

The winner was well backed on course from 10/3 into 9/4 and had been available at 9/2 this morning.

“She's a well-bred filly. We were a bit worried about the ground even though she's by Montjeu,” revealed Oxx's assistant 'Slim' O'Neill.

“She's a very good mover and just got away with it in that ground. We decided to come wide purposely. I don't think we'll try her again on that ground.”
