Tough As Nails sired his first winner as My Silver Nails caused a 14/1 upset in the Paddy Power Onside App Nursery Handicap at the Curragh.
The son of Dark Angel was placed in both the Railway Stakes and the Phoenix Stakes for Mick Mulvany, and the Co. Meath trainer was delighted to also train the young stallion’s first winner.
Chris Hayes’ mount ploughed a lone trail up the centre of the course in this six-furlong event before edged left to join her five rivals well over a furlong out.
She stayed on powerfully inside the final furlong to beat Golden Spell by two and three quarter lengths, with Solar Wave a neck further back in third.
Mulvany said, “We left her a bit short the last day and I knew she was crying out for a bit further. She has been very honest and deserved her win.
“That’s her ninth race and she’s been very consistent. I was fancying her a bit to turn the tables around with Golden Spell as she’d a stone and a half more than at Bellewstown and the ground there was a bit lively for us.
“She ran well the first day on real heavy ground, and hopefully it’s onwards and upwards. It’s the first winner for the stallion.
“Chris was brilliant on her going out the gate of the parade ring. She was full of herself and he did well to stay on.”
