Willie Mullins was left to rue a missed opportunity in the dramatic Unibet Irish Gold Cup at Leopardstown today as the Champion Trainer's Killultagh Vic missed out on winning the Grade 1 feature race.
Killultagh Vic held a lead of two lengths over eventual winner Edwulf when crashing out at the final fence and while the injury-plagued gelding was subsequently able to walk away, Mullins later reported “I thought we were unlucky. I didn't get a chance to talk to Paul (Townend, jockey) as he's gone away for x-rays.
“I imagine he'll go straight for the Gold Cup now and he seemed fine coming up here to towards the parade ring. He seemed to be walking good and loose but you'd imagine he'll be sore in the morning after it.”
Regarding Killultagh Vic's now seemingly improved Gold Cup prospects, he added “I'd rather have it (the Irish Gold Cup) in my pocket but he ran a cracker.”
Mullins won seven of the 15 races on offer over the two days, and has now moved to within approximately E200,000 of leader Gordon Elliott at the head of the Trainers' Championship.
