John Quinn enjoyed a successful Irish raid when sending sprinter Mr Wagyu over from his Malton base to take the Scurry Handicap at the Curragh.

Irish born Quinn, who has had plenty of success in his native country in recent years with horses such as Safe Voyage and El Astronaute, had to sweat as his charge was made to battle hard before taking the main prize across the Irish Sea.

Breaking smartly as one would expect from a British trained sprinter, the seven-year-old was headed at the furlong pole, as a whole host of horses came there with live chances.

To his credit, the Wokingham fourth showed real determination to get his head back in front inside the last 150 yards before then having to hold the late challenge of Big Gossey

Assistant Sean Quinn said:- “He's a horse that, every year you get to June and he comes to himself.

“I don't know why but he's never won before June in his life. June and July seem to be his months and that was fantastic.

“We've a conundrum in September, a nice problem. He ran so well in the Ayr Gold Cup last year when he was third but you've got the Bold Lad back here on Champions Weekend and they are only six days apart.

“I'll leave that to the lads and they can make the decision.”
