Milan springs shock for Mahon

Sat 27th Aug 2011, 18:22

Stephen Mahon returned to the winners' enclosure when Mare Of Milan made all to claim the concluding bumper at Galway.

Derek O'Connor was a late replacement on the daughter of Milan and gave her a canny ride from the front.

The 25/1 shot kicked clear of her rivals turning for home and galloped on strongly to score by six-lengths from Cooper's Dream 0AMahon only returned to the trainer's ranks recently and last saddled a winner 'on the track' when The Quiet Enforcer won at Ballybrit in September 2008.

"I'm delighted to be back," said Mahon afterwards.

"The Turf Club have been more than generous and I have to thank them for their help and also my owner Tom Quinn. I've been overwhelmed by the amount of support I've had.

"I'm very disappointed that Peter Casey couldn't take the ride but his son is not well so I understand completely.

"This mare just needed the run the last day as I was in the process of putting in a five furlong gallop but she travelled well for a good bit here last time."

Andrew Ring, rider of All Honours was hit with a two-day ban for disobeying the starters orders.
