Amateur jockey Moira McElligott had a dream return from injury as she steered 16/1 shot Killcara Boy home in the two mile one handicap hurdle at Killarney.
Both the eight-year-old’s previous hurdle wins had come on heavy ground but one McElligott delivered him at the second last he wasn’t for stopping as he galloped to the line to win by three lengths. Tirmoyle at 10/1 chased him home in second with Another Ambition (6/1) in third and Byron Blue at 20/1 getting fourth-placed money for his work.
Trainer Patrick Neville said: “Moira missed out on a winner yesterday (Chrisdonlady). I wouldn’t let her ride it as she was coming back from a broken collarbone so I wouldn’t let her ride over fences. This was a lovely ride to get her back on.
“We couldn’t get him right for a long time, but we knew he was right today and he had a lot of beach work done. He'll go to Galway next.”
Kilcara Boy wasn’t unbacked having been 25/1 this morning and 20/1 on first show at the track. The big money came for Luimneach Abu though from 6/1 down to 7/2 favourite. He lost his place before the home straight and trailed in 13th of the 16 runners.
This winner was Moira McElligott's second career success.
