He stumbled leaving the stalls when sixth of the eight in the Dewhurst asa 20/1 chance justa week ago, and today back in Group Three company Glounthaune struck in the Richmond Homes Killavullan Stakes at Leopardstown.
A Curragh maiden victor in April, Glounthaune's form figures now stand at '161' after the Ballydoyle Kodiac colt beat Pennine Hills (28/1) by halfa length.
It wasa good result for the O'Briens as Joseph trains Pennine Hills, with Michael O'Callaghan's I Am Magic runninga big one in third at 66/1. He was just another halfa length off.
The 5/1 victor chased the leaders in fourth under Seamie Heffernan. He went seconda furlong out, leading inside the final furlong and staying on well close home. Boundless Ocean the fourth place finisher, could find no room when he needed it.
Market-leader Homeless Songs kept on without reaching the principals down the outer in the final furlong. Ultimately he didn't live up to the expectations of those that made hima 6/4 shot though, in sixth position.
“He’sa very big colt by Kodiac who was an impressive winner but then wenta bit weak and misseda lot of time," said Heffernan.
“His work was nice going to the Dewhurst and he ran well without being placed. He came out of it fresh and Aidan was happy enough to let him take his chance today. He said that he’d improved and I was delighted to put on these colours (those of Mrs Stockwell) which have been very lucky for me.
“I’ve beena little bit disappointed with some of ours lately so I’d say this fella has loads to come and probably did well to win today. He showeda strong will and won well at the line.
“He hasa bit of class and I thinka mile is his trip.”
The Stewards reviewed an incident inside the final furlong involving Boundless Ocean, ridden by L.T. McAteer, New Energy ridden by R.C. Colgan, and Pennine Hills, ridden by D.P. McDonogh, where it appeared Boundless Ocean checked. Having viewed the recording of the race and considered the matter, the Stewards were satisfied that no further action was warranted.
