Lightening Stricks was the comprehensive victor of a mile handicap in Listowel today.

Liam Roche 's 10-year-old gelding led into the home straight under Dylan Hogan and had the whole field off the bridle.

The pair still had some two and a half furlongs to travel but they weren't for relenting.

Pat Smullen and Sleepy Head pursued them but could make no headway at the business end and went down by a couple of lengths.

The winner was backed from 14/1 to 10/1 while the runner-up was a 6/1 chance.

In a race in which very few horses got into, Avalanche took third at 14/1. The top weight was beaten four and three quarter lengths by the winner.

Lightening Stricks was second in this race last year.
