Sonny Carey saddled his first winner under rules and Peterjon Carberry enjoyed his first success since based back in Ireland this season after a lengthy spell out through injury as Brosna Rocco landed the Porthally Cove Handicap Hurdle at Tramore.

The Shirocco mare, whose dam Brosna Val was ridden by Carey to win over hurdles at Navan ten years ago, was produced to lead at the final flight and kept on really well on the run-in to score by four and a half lengths at odds of 14/1. Quarry Lil made most of the running but the 11/4 favourite could find no extra from before the last finishing second, with top-weight Monty’s Mission a further length and a half adrift in third.

Carey said, “Peterjon gave her a great ride. He’s top class and we are very lucky to have him. He comes in and schools for us and we are friends for a long time.

“It’s great for him to get a winner as he’s back after an injury. Hopefully that gets him going as he’s very light and a great rider.

“This mare is a bit hot and has taken a lot of minding at home but she jumps well and that ground suited her. She just gallops away and she might improve with a bit more experience.

“She’s owned by Tony Kilduff, who is an uncle of my wife Mary. Her father Noel Kilduff breeds them all and minds them when they are babies. He does a great job.

“We rent some of Arthur Moore’s yard and breaking and pre-training is our main job. We have great clients and it’s going well.”

Carberry said, "I was riding in France and picked up a shoulder injury. I moved home then and took the licence back out during the summer. Hopefully I can keep it going now."
