After Jamie Powell earlier on the Bellewstown card, John Gleeson was a second teenager to ride his first winner as he guided the 6/5 favourite Dhabyah to success in the Western Motors Drogheda (Q.R.) Race.
The 17-year-old son of racing broadcaster Brian sent his mount straight to the front and she stayed on well in the closing stages to beat Big Challenge (17/2) by three lengths.
It was a first start in this country for the 90-rated daughter of Australia, a debut winner for William Haggas at Haydock last August and now in the care of Joseph O’Brien.
The delighted winning rider said: “I’m from Ardmore, County Waterford and spend most of my time with John Kiely, the credit goes to him. Without John I certainly wouldn’t be able to do what I’m doing today. He’s taught me everything and I can’t thank him enough.
“It’s great for Joseph to give me the opportunity today. I go down to him two times a week if I can. I love it and I learn loads from Joseph and all the lads down there. It’s my first ride for Joseph.
“She’s a lovely straightforward filly, bounced out of the gates and Joseph told me to try and keep it simple. She has a fine big stride and we let her use it today.”
