Notable Graduate had to work hard to give Dermot Weld 11 wins for the week at Galway.

20/1 shot The Black Russian made a bold bid from the front in the two-mile Trappers Inn Maiden Hurdle.

He built up a healthy lead early on and even-money shot Notable Graduate had to get to work to narrow the gap going to the second last.

The favourite looked set for victory turning for home but a mistake at the last made things harder and he needed a strong drive from Derek O'Connor to record a length-and-three-quarters success.

It was only the second start over timber for the smart Flat performer, who had been fourth on his sole previous hurdle outing at Leopardstown last Christmas.

O'Connor came in for the ride at the last moment. Originally Robbie McNamara was booked but couldn't make the weight.

Ruby Walsh was requested as a replacement but the stewards refused as it was not a like-for-like change (professional taking over from amateur).

O'Connor said afterwards: “He was on and off the bridle throughout the race and there was a fierce pace set by Tony Kelly's horse. He missed the last hurdle but kept on well up the hill.

“I was very lucky to get the ride but there is no better man to ride for around Galway than Mr Weld.”

Weld was equalling his second best total at the festival. His best year was 2011 when he saddled a remarkable 17 winners.
