Gambled-on Galway-owned favourite Theatre World was beaten by another with an owner from the City of the Tribes as reserve Oh'herewego (25s into 20s) made full use of his opportunity in the Paud, Sarah & Mary Fitzmaurice Handicap Hurdle at Listowel.
Owned and bred in Galway by Gerard Murphy, and trained for him by Athenry-based Val O'Brien, Oh’herewego was ridden by Donagh Meyler.
O'Brien, following up quickly after his win with Trenchtown Rock (also a 20/1 chance) at Wexford last Saturday, saw his charge here stay on dourly over the closing couple of flights to keep Theatre World at bay by six lengths.
"His previous run was a little bit disappointing but before that he won in Ballinrobe and we always knew he'd improve from it (his latest outing)," said Meyler.
"The plan was then to come here today and he done it really well.
"My agent Ciaran O'Toole is doing a great job at the moment and he let me know that the horse had got in this morning so it was brilliant."
The Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board Veterinary Officer examined I Will Follow (FR), trained by Martin Brassil, at the request of the Stewards and reported the animal to be blowing hard post race.
The Stewards requested a report from V. T. O'Brien, trainer, as to the apparent improvement in form of Oh'herewego, placed first, as compared with its recent form.
V.T. O' Brien stated that his charge didn't handle the pace on his last run and made a bad mistake in running on that occasion.
Today's pace was more suited to V.T. O' Brien's charge, he was more comfortable in running and jumped better.
Having considered the evidence the Stewards noted the explanation offered.
D.E. Mullins, rider of About You trained by Michael Hourigan, reported to the Clerk of Scales that his mount got injured in running and pulled up.
