The Grade One Topaz Novice Chase at Leopardstown looked an excellent race in prospect and it didn't disappoint as 9/4 favourite Don Poli was driven home by Bryan Cooper. Lots Of Memories who has two wins to his name over this three-mile trip, set out to make it a true test. The petrol started to dwindle though in the home straight.
At this stage Bryan Cooper steered Don Poli into a threatening position and the pair jumped the last just in front of Paul Carberry and Apache Stronghold (5/1) who were stalking them.
The two horses battled their way to the line, but 150 yards out Don Poli began to get the better of his rival and he forged on strongly to win by three lengths.
Willie Mullins said: "He's just some bus to ride. Every fences it's 1-2-3 pop and you can pick your spot with him. He's a lovely horse with lots of ability..
"He was idling and looking around and that's his nature. When he ran in France first time they put cheekpieces on him as they couldn't get him to pick up the bridle and race.
"He was interested in everything going on around him but the penny has dropped now.
"I had nominated the four mile chase for him, but we'll have to talk to Mr O'Leary as Gigginstown have a huge amount of staying chasers.
"They may have others for the RSA, but he could be a possible. He'll get an entry for all the novices at Cheltenham.
"That was a very very good chase, probably the best Topaz Chase ever run.
"He could be anything. He's improving all the time and could be a Gold Cup horse.
"He a fabulous jumper. He style of racing is very relaxed and he only races when he has to but he's getting a lot better.
"I thought today he showed a lot more interest early on today. Normally he doesn't come alive until late.
"We might come back in trip with him and see what he can do. The Moriarty is a possible and he'll get an entry."
Bryan Cooper added: "He's very good. He probably got me out of trouble at the last. I was happy the whole way and he never made a mistake.
"I wasn't doing much in front. When Paul got to me I knew within two strides he would go on and win the race. He's top-class."
Paddy Power cut Don Poli from 4/1 to 2/1 favourite for the National Hunt Chase and from 14/1 to 10/1 for the RSA Chase.
