Chicago May broke new ground for Henry de Bromhead when supplying the Knockeen trainer with his first debut two-year-old winner in the Thanks Sally Carroll Irish EBF Maiden at Naas.

The Co. Waterford based handler is best known for his many big race successes in the National Hunt sphere but he now appears to have a useful juvenile on his hands.

The 25/1 chance quickened up impressively inside the final furlong under Ronan Whelan to beat Channel Stuffer by two and a half lengths.

The 5/2 favourite Cruciatus could find no extra in the final furlong to finish a further half-length back in third.

De Bromhead said, “She is a filly we have always liked but I thought she would probably need the run as I hadn’t done that much with her at home. I’m delighted with her and she’s done it well in the end.

“Ronan said it felt like they were only hacking, and he was really impressed by her. She’ll stay further no bother.

“Gorane (won on her second start at Dundalk and went on to score at Listed level) is the only other two-year-old winner I’ve had before.”
