Wayne Lordan returned from injury in Dundalk's Patton Race today but the Breeders Cup-winning jockey was defeated in the three-runner race, which was won by 10/1 outsider Bergamasco
Today's race has recently lost its Listed 'Pattern' status but attracted three capable runners with Lordan, who suffered leg and elbow fractures and an arm laceration in June's Irish Derby, returning on Ballydoyle's 104-rated 4/5 favourite Navy Seal
Navy Seal led for much but was headed by recent maiden winner Nerano (5/4) under two furlongs out.
Bergamasco, rated 86, was stepping out of handicap company and while friendless in the market, arrived from last place under Ronan Whelan to lead a furlong out, beating Nerano by 1.75 lengths.
Navy Seal finished last of the trio, three-parts of a length further behind.
Regarding the Cappella Sansevero-sired winner, successful trainer Jack Davison said "sometimes I think it is important not to get too caught up in pedigree and just train what is in front of you.
“It is a useful family and hopefully he'll get a bit more credit.”
He added “he is a big, honest horse that loves a gallop. He has thrived up here, obviously gets a mile well and likes the surface. I think he is a good advertisement for what we do with a relatively small team of horses. He is just another nice one to have in the yard.
"He likes to come from off the pace and like any horse, it is important that he relaxes early and breathes. He came home strongly and I don't think another two furlongs would be a problem either.
"We will enjoy today and we have plenty of options now."
