Review CORK 8th Aug
< Unsung Heroine put a big field of more experienced fillies and mares in their place with an emphatic victory in the Give Thanks Stakes.
The Tommy Stack-trained three-year-old, stepping into Group Three class after one victory in a maiden race, was settled in midfield by Wayne Lordan in the 12-furlong contest.< Hasanka went on in the straight with plenty hot on her heels, and it was Unsung Heorine (11-2) who proved best as she swept through to score by two lengths. Connections are pondering a crack at the Doncaster St Leger.
The Listed Platinum Stakes produced a cracking finish and the prize went to Duff but it was a desperately close call.
Fran Berry set out to make all on the Edward Lynam-trained five-year-old (8-1) and looked to have his rivals cooked coming down the straight, but the gelding ran out of gas in the final 100 yards.< Mr Medici forged to the front of the chasing bunch and in a lunge for the line, missed out by a short head, with the dead-heaters Prima Luce and Jalmira a further neck away in third.
There was another pulsating finish in the Newmarket Handicap, which was won by Tom Hogan's 13-2 shot Saranjo
Fran Berry's mount looked to be travelling best of all when she was brought up on the outside with two furlongs to travel.
But she had to pull out all the stops as Crowning Monment would not be denied easily and ran on strongly, going down by a short head in the end.
It would have been unfair if Lizzie Bennett (6-1) had not prevailed in a tight finish to the Irish Stallion Farms EBF (Fillies) Handicap.
Chris Hayes had plenty of horse under him in the final two furlongs but could not find a way through until the last 100 yards, where Joseph Murphy's filly showed guts to squeeze through for victory by three-quarters of a length.
