Brew lands double for McConnell

Fri 1st Jul 2011, 20:41

Local handler John McConnell had a day to remember at Bellewstown when Black N Brew gave him a double in the mile handicap. Philosophers Guest looked the likely winner when kicking clear two furlongs out but the field chased her down inside the final furlong.

Black N Brew finished best to get up for a length success under a strong drive by Gary Carroll.

The winner had been backed at 8/1 this morning and was eventually sent off 5/1 on course.

"This has been the plan for a good while and I really fancied him today. It's nice when it comes off," said McConnell.

It was also a double for winning owners, the Any News Syndicate, who were also responsible for opening race scorer Rockview Diamond

The winner had drifted left in the closing stages, doing no favours to the placed horses, and Carroll picked up a two-day ban for careless riding.
