Father-and-son Philip and Luke Dempsey combined to win consecutive renewals of Punchestown's 25-runner Day Three-opening handicap hurdle today, with nose winner Broomfield Bijou (6/1f).

Broomfield Bijou tied with unrelated stablemate Broomfield Hall in beating 24 rivals in today's renewal, sponsored by Specialist Group Joinery, in which three horses unseated rider and a loose horse carried out three more, at the second-last.

Broomfield Bijou raced with the pace and at the line was all-out to beat By Your Side by the narrowest margin.

Trainer Philip Dempsey said “Luke (son and jockey) gave her a good ride. She’s a lovely mare and jumped well.

“She’s had two quick runs and we’ll probably give her a break. She’s only five and we might stay hurdling next year. She has a lovely jumping pedigree and is from the family of Anibale Fly.

“She likes nice ground, will stay further and there is a mares’ Listed race in Killarney but that may come a bit quick.”
