25/1 upset as Flight overturns odds-on favourite
The market for the opening race of the evening at Limerick, the Irish Mirror Maiden, suggested it would be a two horse race, however the Charlie Swan trained newcomer Roman Flight had other ideas, as he stayed on best, to win by half a length at the line.
The 8/11fav Gonebeyondthemoon looked the winner a furlong and a half from home as she was sent on by her jockey Wayne Lordan. The winning son of Antonius Pius looked set to finish a good second, however he found more for his jockey Declan McDonogh and nabbed the favourite close home.
Third best in the betting Mullingar finished a further length and three parts back in third at 11/1 with the second favourite Raydari (5/2) best of the rest in fourth, six lengths back.
The dam of the winner, Flight Sequence was a decent handicapper for Lady Herries in England winning four, including a £30,000 handicap at Redcar back in 2002.
The winning owners, the Favourites Racing Syndicate, have tasted success in the past with horses such as Livingstonebramble, who was trained by Willie Mullins.
Winning trainer Charlie Swan said afterwards: "He is a nice horse, who had been working quite well at home, but he hadn't been working on grass. I told the owners that I hoped he would be in the first three, so it was a nice surprise that he won it. I have no plans for him now.
"The owners (Favourites Racing Syndicate) are big owners in the UK and this is their first horse with me."
