In what could be interpreted as a good sign for Mayo in the All-Ireland Football Final on Sunday, owner Tom Doran struck with a double on day four of the Listowel festival. The brace was completed at odds of 98/1 when his home-bred Dorans River took the concluding Listowel Vintners Association INH Flat Race.
Always up there disputing the lead under Jamie Codd, on his third start, the Golan gelding led two furlongs out and he was ridden clear over a furlong out, keeping on strongly in the final furlong to beat odds-on Kagney by seven and a half lengths.
The Tom Hogan-trained Dorans River may have become briefly unbalanced and brushed off the rail under a furlong out, but that did nothing to halt his progress.
Mayo-native Doran had been on the mark earlier with the Gordon Elliott-trained and Jack Kennedy-ridden Carrig Cathal
Tom Hogan said afterwards: "I was afraid he might not handle the ground but he did. I'm delighted for Tom (Doran) as it's the first winner he has bred.
"He wants a trip and as he handles this ground we may think about going for a winners bumper."
For his part Doran reported: "That's my third double as I had doubles before at Ballinrobe and Downpatrick. This is my first one out of the mare, who was decent herself, and I have another four or five out of her to come so it's great."
