After race at Gowran Park Sat, 17th Feb, 2024 (1st)
Granny would have enjoyed that and it’s a pity that she’s not here to be in the (winning) picture,. It was a great performance and great to have the owners Ed and Mary Ware here. The Red Mills Chase was one of the races we pinpointed at the start of the year. Small fields suit him – he likes to get on with things and wears the hood. He’s hot and we were a bit worried that he’d be a bit fresh on his first run and do too much on the heavy ground. Paul got a few breathers into him. Those Grade Twos or Grade Threes are where he’s most comfortable and he could go to Fairyhouse. He is a better chaser than he was a hurdler and loves jumping.

That was a huge performance from him over that trip the way he did it. Paul never got a chance to settle him, he just galloped and jumped the two mile and six. I thought that was way better than anything he has shown. He’s given himself a very hard race but it’s the way he likes to race. I think we’ll be looking at conditions races for him but the Kerry National is worth a lot of money. We’ll think about it and he may be entered for it.

After race at Killarney Mon, 15th May, 2023 (1st)
He’s just so well in himself but the biggest thing I got from today was the fact that he settled so well over the first mile. Maybe the penny is beginning to drop with him. He needs to learn how to race over a trip because he’s bred to race over a trip and that’s what I want him to do. We tried it one day over hurdles at Navan and he just ran away with Paul. Fortunately, today he didn’t run away with him until after the winning post!

Paul is very sore. He is arm is very sore after his fall from Dark Raven yesterday. He is going to take a day or two off. He won’t ride today or tomorrow.

We decided to come back over hurdles with him and it might be the right thing to do going out in trip with him. He likes to get on with the job so Paul let him get on with it today. He put in some tremendous jumps and I think if he settles a little better over hurdles that might be his career for the near future. Otherwise I’ll mix it with him over fences. I want to get him out in trip. He’s bred to stay further but he races a bit keenly. I think he’ll settle down once he gets used to racing over a longer trip.
