1029/1 treble for 'world class' Whelan

Manbehindthemoney benefitted from a determined drive by Ronan Whelan to get up in the final stride of the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Median Auction Maiden at Leopardstown. Fri 13th May
After race at Dundalk Fri, 23rd Sep, 2022 (1st)
He won his maiden earlier in the year with a very similar ride from Ronan (Whelan) around Leopardstown. Then just between one thing and another, conditions didn't suit and tracks didn't suit and things didn't work out for him. We gelded him during the year. That helped but he ran into trouble at Galway and he came out of it sore on bottomless ground which didn't suit him at all. We had to give him a break after that and he has come back with enthusiasm. He has ability. Some of his runs were very good - the filly of Jessie's (Harrington, Paris Peacock) that won the Listed race and Group 3, he beat her in the maiden (at Leopardstown). He likes a good, quick track. That's the first time we have tried him here and it obviously suited. Ronan said he shot home and when he got to the front, then he had done enough and he looked a wee bit around him. It was quite impressive and it looked a reasonably competitive race.

All credit to Ronan — it was a super ride. He’s a horse that is learning on the job. He was very green first time out at Cork and again at Gowran Park fell out of the stalls and Billy Lee brought him home nicely. The front two went hard and we had something to run at. He still looks very raw and very green. He’s thriving in training which is always a good sign. We were hopeful today and it looks like he has plenty of options both in terms of ground and trip. He was doing his best work at the finish there so it looks like he will get further. He’s looks quite an exciting horse but time will tell.
A Oliver
