He had won well at Galway and, while he didn't run so well at Roscommon, today he was perfect and I had a willing partner up the straight. I had previously ridden Free Solo at the Curragh, he led me and I found a nice run in the straight. I wasn't sure if we had won and Daniel King (denied in a close third on Brave Troop) has a valuable claim and I wasn't sure if he got up on the line. The O'Donnell family are from Co Limerick and not too far from here and I've known them for years, so it is great to ride a winner for them. Thank you to Pat Healy (Listowel committee) and Mark Enright (retired jockey) for organising this and it is great to be here. I spent lots of time as a child hanging around the weigh room wanting to be a jockey and to ride a winner here is a big relief. My mother (from nearby Killarney) is very excited and I'm sure she enjoyed this one!. Unfortunately I have other business commitments today and am at the Sales, but this is brilliant. The horse had good form and Mark (Enright, retired jockey) contacted me to say Oisin was available, so it was a no brainer to use him. I said to my wife that he was beaten turning in, but these good riders just find a way to win and he was fantastic. Oisin and my son Patrick go back a long way from when they went pony racing together, are friends and were also apprenticed together. The horse is owned by a great syndicate and this means an awful lot.

Before Colin hit the ground at Killarney he said 'Galway, lads'. He had looked at his previous form and he folded a tiny bit in Killarney (finishing third) but seven furlongs here was spot on,. His form is very solid and there were a lot of ducks in a row today. It is hard to get him early in the year but he comes to form in the autumn and that's just him. Peter Keogh, from Knocklong, who heads up the syndicate, is with us three or four years and makes the entries, decides on who rides him etc and we try him have the horses fit and healthy. I like to think we do things to a very high standard and it is a team effort. I have no idea where we're going next!

We did our dough here last year when he was unlucky having had a bad break but he did handle the track. The ground was a worry but he had come forward massively from Roscommon. Shane (Foley) said he gave a massive heave in Roscommon so we were confident enough that he'd come forward and he has done. He is a strange horse who comes to form at this time of the year - you'd associate that mostly with fillies but he definitely was under the weather and lethargic early in the season. He is fairly buzzing now. We've had half a dozen runners this year, a few syndicates came together and Peter Keogh, who is a big help, joined me with three horses. He rides out in the morning before going to work and is responsible for those horses being around the place. I've done my tour of duty (re training) and you only leave the show room once, but you never turn down business!
