State Man showed tremendous gears today. Daryl came in on Impaire Et Passe and he said ‘we quickened twice and then Paul quickened away again a third time’. Daryl thought he maybe had Paul where he wanted him at the second-last and he said he quickened twice between the last two and Paul went away again. Testing conditions might really suit him (State Man), so we will be praying for rain over Cheltenham!. State Man ran a great race last March, finishing second to Constitution Hill. Hopefully will be around to keep Constitution Hill straight, but I don’t think Nicky Henderson and Michael Buckley are going to be worried. We are delighted to win and will probably come back here for the Dublin Racing Festival (Irish Champion Hurdle), and hopefully go on to March then.

It's been a superb weekend for the team. I'm delighted for my owners and my staff,. It's extraordinary, everything has come together. We have tremendous owners that invest in Irish racing and they love it. It's tremendous to have people like that bringing in money from abroad to put into Irish racing. We're the beneficiaries and we're very lucky. He's a lovely racehorse. Himself and Galopin Des Champs, Fact To File and El Fabiolo have beautiful temperaments and that's what you need, it's half the battle in a horse. It means the trainer can train them the way he wants to and the jockey can ride them the way he wants to. It makes life a lot easier for people involved. I thought Christmas was his best performance up until today. Today's race was different, we tried something different with Impaire Et Passe but he obviously didn't enjoy being out in front. I think he'll take a lead and maybe he needs another half mile, obviously he needs fences down the road. It was an experiment to go down the Champion Hurdle road this year and it doesn't look like it's working. The Champion Hurdle is there though and I think there are only two horses in front of him for me. Anyone of those can get injured or run bad on the day, if you are not in you can't win it. Everyone will put their tuppence worth in and we'll see what happens.

Paul was much happier getting down off him this year than he was last year so maybe there is a bit of improvement there for this season,. I thought he’d won turning for home and I was surprised when there was a bit of a shemozzle and I got a bit of a fright for a couple of seconds, but was happy enough then. Impaire Et Passe will go to Fairyhouse next weekend (Hatton’s Grace Hurdle) and we’ll try to keep them apart for as long as we can. They all have to get there in March so we’ll concentrate on the domestic scene for the moment.

I had a little peep leaving the back straight and saw where Jack was, I had a fair idea what was coming and what they had in their minds. It is easy to cover it when you are on the best horse!. He is so chilled out - he runs in the earplugs and he is winning with them so we haven't taken them out. I don't know if he needs them or not but why change it?. It's so simple to ride this lad and that's probably why I have such a soft spot for him. You can leave the weighroom, get to the start, make it up as you go along and he'll get you out of trouble. He's not flashy, he does what he has to do and that's probably why he keeps winning because he keeps a little bit in the locker. When you're riding him, you're confident on him and then you just have to keep him up to his work. We were wondering what tactics Jack would use and the game went according to how we thought it would go. He just did what he normally does, pulled it out when he needed to pull it out. Paul said there was a cameraman on the line and he stopped to have a look and prick his ears at him. That's the sort of horse he is, he's just got lots of talent and he keeps doing it which is huge. He's very uncomplicated, he's uncomplicated in his stable, he's an old pet.

I was amazed with the way Paul rode him, I thought he’d be much more forward, I didn’t dream that he’d only be fifth or sixth jumping the fourth-last. But he just rode him with supreme confidence. I thought he’d make more use of his stamina, but Paul seemed to ride him for speed today and he clearly felt there was enough in the ground to take it out of the horses in front of him. But when jockeys are riding with confidence, they can do things like that and I feel that’s the way he’s been riding all season. He’s a fantastic jockey.

We have our chance, State Man is out and racing and is going to go there in tip-top order. It’s all to play for. Everything is open. They (connections of Constitution Hill) are not going to be too worried and they’ll be confident enough they have enough in the locker to beat us no matter what we do. I doubt you’d be able to lock up Constitution Hill, as soon as he got one bit of daylight he’d be gone, and that wouldn’t be fair anyhow. All’s fair in love and war and you go and run. I don’t think there’ll be too many runners in it and a change of tactics might make all the difference.

Paul said if nothing was going on he'd make his own running and keep it simple. He just missed the last, but Paul said with where he would have had to stand off he just let him fiddle it instead. That's what you want in a hurdler when they are too far back, to go in and fiddle it. He's done enough for the season. We'll freshen him up now and get him back to do the same things next season, I hope. I can't really see him going over fences, I'd say he'll be a hurdle horse. I don't know whether I need to go out in trip with him. He's a horse that still has improvement in him.

It wasn't the ideal situation(making the running), so it was a nice performance to come out and do that. Paul surprised me when he came into the parade ring and I asked him what he was going to do and he said he was going to make it,. He didn't see much to make it in the race so I said 'okay, do that'. It worked out, the horse is not used to being in front but he jumped well enough in front and Paul thought he was a bit idle in front as well. He did everything right and you couldn't ask anymore.

He just keeps improving and I think there is more improvement again after today,. We were discussing where he goes next and the Dublin Racing festival looks like the plan now. Hopefully we don't get any setbacks, the horses have been coming out of Leopardstown well over the last few days, and we'll look forward to that and then maybe going over to Cheltenham in March. I think Paul was very happy where he was all the time. It's repaid all the faith shown. When you go back to Al Boum Photo running out in Punchestown Joe and Marie rang me up five minutes after the race and said 'whatever happened, happened' and it would make no difference so it's loyalty paying off.

After race at Punchestown Sun, 20th Nov, 2022 (1st)
I was delighted with that, it was a nice start to the season,. The race worked out perfectly for him and Paul asked him a nice question down over the last two hurdles. Sharjah had been working well at home and he put him to bed when Paul asked him. We wanted to get a good run into him. If he's going to go down the Champion Hurdle route he needs to be asked those questions. He was nicely keen in behind Saldier, he got a good lead and did everything that was asked. Thankfully all the hurdles were left in and he got a bit of practice because he needed it. He's probably not Champion Hurdle class jumping-wise yet but that will come in a bigger field with more competition. I think there is plenty of improvement left in him. Looking at that I don't think Henry, Michael Buckley or Nicky Henderson will be too worried but we're going to improve too and I think he is the horse that has improvement in him.

Paul thought he had lots of speed and he showed lots of gears there. He’s a horse to look forward to next season. With a performance like that he could be a Champion Hurdle horse — that is probably the route we will go down. He’s very novicey and improving all the time. Paul said he was concentrating on keeping him settled and when he picked him up he switched gears. He was only going through the motions after that. From the first time we worked him at home he looked decent. Joe and Marie (Donnelly) have also purchased his four-year-old brother before Cheltenham.

He did well to win and I hope he can brush up his jumping,. He’s a horse for the Flat, and while maybe not this season certainly next. Now I am thinking the Grade One at Punchestown as the next step. He’s a lovely horse with a lot of ability that will do both jobs.
