He was very smooth and jumped like he did at home. Every time I schooled him he always looked very capable and confident over fences and showed that today. If he wasn't good we wouldn't have gone chasing with him but he was so natural at home and did today what he has done at home,. In today's race he was meeting a lot less competition compared to what he had been meeting over hurdles for the past four or five years - none of those horses had ever run in a Grade 1 hurdle and he enjoyed it. I imagine he'll stay to winners' races now and he would get nice ground for the Drinmore.

That's tremendous, it wasn't good for the heart. I didn't think he was going to get up, I just thought he was going to hang fire,. He didn't look comfortable coming around the second last bend and going to the second last hurdle I thought 'oh is it not happening today'. Patrick had to cod him and coax him before he really went for him. He said he wasn't as sharp as other years. He got pushed out on to yesterday's ground with the hurdle missing and that just blunted his speed in the last furlong but he managed enough to do it anyhow. It was a terrific race. Whether it was the ground or the wind he wasn't as sharp as he was in other years but four years running you can't expect a horse to be improving. He's been a fantastic horse for Patrick, Rich and Susannah. Rich likes Patrick riding him and they are a great team. He's a special horse for that partnership. It's extraordinary the amount of Grade 1s Patrick has ridden, he takes his chances and takes them well. We might go straight to Cheltenham now, I'll have a word with Rich and Susannah but it might be the thing to do. The Dublin Racing festival doesn't seem to work for him.

He runs his race everyday and he has a little bit of class. He’s a wonderful servant to have around the place. I’d imagine he’ll go back to Leopardstown at Christmas all being well. It was very tactical but the way it played out played into Sharjah’s hands. They went a bit too slow for the filly (Echoes In Rain). She was too buzzy and didn’t jump well enough at that slow pace. She has a lot of improvement to do but hopefully she will improve.

He’s some horse and he likes this track. Patrick loves riding him, and the horse responds to him,. It can be very hard to ride a horse like that, the way he rides him, but he has great confidence in him. For a guy his size and weight, he has huge commitment. He does a lot of other work at home, running the yard as assistant trainer. He might be taking my job shortly!. I’d imagine Sharjah will come back here for the Irish Champion Hurdle at the Dublin Racing Festival. He has a little bit of class about him. He was second last year in the Champion Hurdle, and might have been a little far back then. Saldier ran a great race on his comeback. I thought Saint Roi would finish closer — but Mark said he went for his race too early and he’d like to have sat longer.

The ground is crucial to him. It made all the difference. Patrick said he's so good on the ground,. I'm very happy for Patrick and very happy for Rich, who probably hasn't had the best Christmas for him. I thought the mistake put Melon out of the race. Ruby felt he was staying on at the end but it was very disappointing from him. However a good few of our horses having their first runs this season have run similar types of races and I'm hoping he'll improve on that. It's been up and down for us but I'm very pleased to get another Grade 1 today.

The other two (Faugheen and Tombstone) took each other on in front and maybe galloped each other into the ground. Paul took advantage of that. He (Sharjah) wants a sharp two miles. He's done a lot for the season and I don't know if I'm going to go on with him now or not. I may give him a little break and come back in the spring but after doing that today it looks like we'll have to go to Christmas with him. We'll see how he is when he comes out of this race. He's had no break between Flat racing and the Galway Hurdle and everything. Paul said he came alive going down the back stretch today, and he thought that far out that he had a great chance of winning. He disappointed in Down Royal the last day but he was taken on in front. Faugheen missed two or three hurdles. I would have expected him to find a bit more but he didn't. The two in front just collapsed. The decision is made to stay hurdling and I think we'll just go out in trip as we had intended. His first run was supposed to be the Hatton's Grace but when Melon didn’t work well enough we put this fella in. We've swapped targets for them.

I thought Paul (Townend) was very good technically and tactically on both horses (Carter McKay also) and it was a good performance from him (Sharjah). Obviously nobody wanted to make the running but Paul certainly didn't want to and thought he could use his speed to beat them. It worked out well and he got the jump at the last when he needed it. He'll have no trouble going further and we'll take those novice races as they come and see where he fits in.

He jumped really well. The second last hurdle was bypassed and he quickened up sharply and put the race to bed. It was a nice performance. There is plenty of depth to the ground. I was surprised as I thought it would be loose and sloppy. It'll take a lot of getting all day. We're having a good run with first timers and hopefully that can continue. Hopefully he will improve. He did it very well and I was surprised how well he went on the ground considering his best form seemed to be on the all-weather. He jumped well. He jumped so slick, like a handicapper.
