The Veterinary Officer reported that Furius De Ciergues (FR), trained by Oliver Greenall, appeared to show evidence of possible administration of a substance around it’s mouth and further reported evidence of a puncture wound to the gelding’s jugular vein.
The trainer’s representative, the Veterinary Officer and the Equine Welfare and Integrity Officer were interviewed.
As the Stewards could not be satisfied that Furius De Ciergues (FR) had received only normal food and water by mouth on the day of the race, they withdrew the gelding and ordered it to be routine tested.
They further ordered that a sample of the substance should be tested, and referred the matter to the Head Office of the British Horseracing Authority.
The winner, Mance Rayder (IRE), appeared to show improved form compared with its previous run at Carlisle on 16 February 2021, where the gelding was pulled up.
Henry Hogarth’s explanation that Mance Rayder (IRE) appreciated the return to a quicker surface was noted and the gelding was routine tested.
