Review kilbeggan 4th May
Dessie Hughes was on the mark with a double at Kilbeggan headed by the emphatic victory of Definite Class in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Mares Beginners Chase.
Making her sixth appearance over fences, the seven-year-old occupied a slot in a breakaway group of four for most of the way and shared the lead jumping the second-last before being sent on by Bryan Cooper.
The 4-1 shot soon had the race in the bag and wasn't hard pressed to ease home by 17 lengths, with Gerdalia making late progress to take the runner-up spot.
Hughes had already won the Moate Handicap Hurdle with Glenbarrow (7-1), who has not been back long after a three-year absence. He was always up with the pace, scoring by an easy four and a half lengths under a back-from-injury Roger Loughran.
Davy Condon was another in double form, starting with the victory of Derby winner Kris Kin's half-brother Cause Of Causes in the Kilbeggan Maiden Hurdle.
Gordon Elliot's charge (8-11 favourite) ran into trouble when an odds-on failure last time and the jockey wasn't taking any chances, sending him on four from home and holding the peristent challenge of White Feathers by a head.
Condon completed his brace when the Gillian Callaghan-trained Coldwinters who hadn't set the world alight in his previous runs and was returning from a 10-month lay-off, took the Greville Arms Hotel Handicap Hurdle.
The 20-1 shot joined I Never Knew That three out and won their duel by half a length, with favourite Turnonthegas making up an enormous amount of ground on the final circuit to finish a close third.
Charles Byrnes' mare E Mac (4-1) delivered on the promise of her jumps debut second at Tipperary last month when she took the Follow Kilbeggan On Facebook Maiden Hurdle.
Champion jockey Davy Russell, getting off the mark for the season, sent her on approaching the third-last and she was pestered all the way home by Ballyadam Approach before seeing him off by half a length.
