Review galway 31st Jul
< Vastonea produced a strong late surge to deny the brave front-running effort of Pintura in the feature race of the second day of the Galway Festival, the Topaz Mile EBF Handicap.
British raider Pintura looked to have seen off all challengers in the home straight, but Declan McDonogh found an extra gear on Kevin Prendergast's 7-1 chance, and he came home half a length to the good.
Prendergast and McDonogh completed a double in the concluding Caulfieldindustrial.com EBF Maiden when Maude Adams (6-1) dug deep to lead well inside the final furlong before holding September Lily by three-quarters of a length.
Dermot Weld notched his fourth winner of the Festival with his first runner of the day when Voleuse De Coeurs took the Topaz Handicap.
Held up well off the pace by Pat Smullen, the 9-2 favourite swept to the front on the turn for home and ran on strongly to score by eight lengths from Domination
It was a much closer call in the Caulfield Industrial Athlone Handicap, in which Chris Hayes forced the Jim Gorman-trained Golden Shoe (13-2) up on the line to beat gallant front-runner Crystal Morning by a head.
Joseph O'Brien was always prominent on his father Aidan's juvenile Magical Dream in the Caulfieldindustrial.com EBF Fillies Maiden and the 5-4 joint favourite kept on gamely to hold Diamond Sky by two lengths.
Pride Of The Artic continued his progression over fences when making virtually all in the Latin Quarter Chase.
Peter Fahey's 6-1 chance was expertly handled at the head of the field by Andrew Leigh, who did not panic when headed briefly approaching the final two fences, and he ran on well to beat Supreme Doc by five and a half lengths.
Adrian McGuiness's Face Value (14-1) ran out a gutsy winner of the Topaz Novice Hurdle, holding Zuzka at bay to win by three and a half lengths under David Splaine.
