Winning 'spare' for O'Connor on Exit Poll

The first two in the market failed to complete in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Beginners’ Chase and Exit Poll (10/3) took full advantage under substitute rider Derek O’Connor. Soviet Pimpernel fell four out and the front-running 9/4 favourite Breaken still held a healthy advantage when blundering and unseating Danny Mullins two out.
Turning into the straight Star Max (6/1) and Exit Poll had the finish to themselves and the latter was travelling much the better. He was pushed out on the run-in to win by four and a half lengths with The Very Man (7/2) filling third spot.
The Jessica Harrington-trained winner is a full-brother to the useful Ex Patriot and was adding to bumper and maiden hurdle victories in the previous couple of seasons.
Runner-up to Andy Dufresne at Wexford last October in his first completed start over fences, the Elusive Pimpernel gelding was getting off the mark at the fourth attempt over the larger obstacles.
“He's done it quite easily and he gave an exhibition of jumping. Possibly the nicer ground is after bringing out improvement in him,” said O'Connor.
“It was a nice performance. It's unfortunate for Darragh (O’Keeffe, who missed his rides today through illness) but it's a nice spare to pick up.”
