Weld's Warrior soldiers on
Pat Smullen continues his bid to regain his Jockey’s Championship (lost to Johnny Murtagh last year) and partnered his second ever winner for Dermot Weld as an owner at Cork today, when Declan’s Warrior won the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden.
The son of One Cool Cat, a 66th winner of the season for Smullen (five clear of nearest rival Fran Berry), broke well, showed plenty of early speed before lasting on for a half length win over Maundays Bay
Weld was not present but Smullen, always a willing representative, stated “Declan’s Warrior has lots of pace and won the race in the first furlong as opposed to the last one.”
Smullen's other winner for Weld as an owner (and indeed Weld's last winner to carry his own colours) came in March 2004 when Mohawk Star won a Leopardstown Flat handicap.
