Walking On Glass reeled in Conron to give Padraig Roche and Leigh Roche a Galway Festival winner in the concluding Latin Quarter Handicap.
Conron had gone for home once he passed Great Bear over two furlongs from home.
At the same time Walking On Glass was noted staying on into contention and he improved to second at the furlong pole.
Conron was still boxing on at the head of affairs but his stride pattern shortened, and he was collared with 150 yards to negotiate.
To Conron's credit he rallied on the inner but had to give best by a head. Forecast/exacta punters who found the first two home were in clover as the winner was 28/1 while the runner-up went off at 33/1.
They drew two lengths clear of third home Eight And Bob (5/1). Turnpike Trip was backed down to 10/11 favourite, but his fate was sealed when he came under pressure on the outer with over three furlongs to travel. He trailed home 14th of the 15 runners.
Trainer Padraig Roche, saddling his first Galway Festival winner, said: “That’s great that he’s put his last run behind him as he’s generally very consistent.
“The last day is best forgotten as he was likely on the pace too much, but I’m delighted with him all told and he could run in a hurdle at Roscommon on Monday.”
