On outing number one for the Garry Caldwell yard, Zambezi Tiger sprung a 66/1 shock in the Easter Mid-Term Madness at Dundalk Handicap under Ross Coakley.
Formerly in the care of Prunella Dobbs and Patrick Griffin and coming off a 166 day break here, Zambezi Tiger reeled in the pace setter Doux Douce (lively in the betting this morning) to triumph by three parts of a length.
A big move for the Tom Foley trained All About Alfie (5s into 5/2 fav) came unstuck when that one could manage no better than fifth place.
A son of Bernard, stable staff association representative and assistant to Pat Martin, Garry Caldwell explained: "It's my first winner on the flat – I've had a point-to-point winner and a hurdle winner before at Ballinrobe.
"He's been working well at home and he seems to be better fresh.
"I've got twelve riding out at the moment and I'm training in Enfield. They're a mixed bunch – for the flat and the jumps."
The Stewards interviewed R. Aguiar, rider of Doux Douce, concerning his use of the whip in the closing stages of this race. Evidence was heard from the rider concerned. Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence the Stewards found R. Aguiar in breach of Regulation 10 3.(f) by using his whip with excessive force and frequency and having taken his record into account suspended him for one race day.
